Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Miranda (Koncewicz)

COHOES Elizabeth Koncewicz Miranda, a life-long Cohoes resident, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. Betty was 101, and a resident of the Eddy Village Green, close to her former residence on Hemple Place, where she resided for 55 years.

Betty was born in 1921, the eighth child of Frances and John Koncewicz. She was a 1939 graduate of Cohoes High School. A devout communicant of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cohoes, she was a life-long member of the Ladies Rosary Society and actively participated in their Polish cooking activities well into her 90s. When her three children were attending St. Michael’s School, she was a founding member of the Sister-Parent Association and served a term as its President. Betty was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Mary Rynasko and Jane Justice, brothers Joseph and Frank, and three infant sisters. She married her Cohoes High sweetheart, Fred Miranda, in 1940. They enjoyed 70 years together until Fred passed in 2010.

She is survived by Colonel (Ret) Frederick J. Miranda (Antje) of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Marilyn S. Bocchi (Amerigo) of Saratoga Springs and Charles C. Miranda (Beverly) of Waterford. Affectionately called MIA by her six grandchildren: Robin Miranda (Joachim Klement), Barbara Miranda (TJ Lazar) Maryjane Hopeck (Jay), Miranda Lia (William, Jr.), Nadine Morell (Michael) and Charles Miranda (Kathy). As well as 13 dearly loved great-grandchildren, Mariana Lia, Alexa Lia, Billy Lia, Anthony Lia, Gabriella Miranda, Olivia Miranda, Sophia Miranda, Jade Hopeck, Logan Hopeck, Sienna Morell, Julianna Morell, Cosley Bruno and Ben Bruno. She was especially fond of her brother Frank’s two sons, Billy (Jennie) and Frank (Lisa) Koncewicz and their twins Evan and Kelan Koncewicz.

Betty was a ‘stay at home’ Mom while her children were in school. She advanced into the employment world first at the Swan Knit, followed by a career in NYS Department of Taxation and Finance. Golf became her passion in retirement as a member of the Van Schaick Island Country Club. Betty could never beat Fred at golf but did outdo him with TWO HOLES IN ONE! Fred played a lot more golf but never had a hole in one. She also enjoyed playing slots in Saratoga and traveling, visiting The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Bermuda, Brazil, Hawaii and Poland. Betty was an excellent cook and baker. Raised in a Polish kitchen and marrying an Italian did not present any problems. She learned from her mother-in-law and her four sisters-in-law and became as adept at home-made pasta and ravioli as she was at Pierogi and Golumpki. In addition to her culinary skills, she was proud of her ability as a seamstress! When looking at old family photos, the most heard comment from Betty was, “I made that outfit!”

Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:45 a.m. from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, Cohoes. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Waterford.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday from 4-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204

The family would like to express their gratitude to the kind staff members of The Eddy Village Green particularly those in House 3 where Elizabeth could usually be found sunning herself in the courtyard and admiring the beautiful roses.
