Obituary for Frank T. Johnson

HALFMOON Frank Turton Johnson, 76, passed peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, July 9th following a prolonged illness.

Born on April 15th, 1946, he was the son of the late Edwin S. Johnson and Mary (Turton) Johnson of Troy and a graduate of Troy High School. Frank served in the US Army from 1968 – 1970 and then went on to work for the NYS Department of Transportation as a Highway Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement.

He was a well known musician, having played drums in several local bands including the Joe Rodino Trio, the “R” Gang Polka Band and the Frank Johnson Quartet. He also served as President of the former Local 13 of the American Federation of Musicians. Frank was a longtime member of the Crescent Boat Club and served as Chairperson of the House & Bar Committees. He was the originator of many of the club’s activities that are still being celebrated there today. In addition, he was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for many years along with many other organizations including the American Legion, the Veterans of Lansingburgh and the Cohoes Moose Lodge.

A beloved friend, relative and merrymaker, it was always guaranteed to be a good time when Frank was present. He was happiest spending time with friends and family out on a pontoon boat over the water, driving his restored firetrucks in local events, and taking a chance on scratch-offs over coffee and jokes. His stories were things of legends.

Frank is survived by his brothers, George (Sandra) Johnson and Gary Johnson both of Troy; by his beloved nephews, Michael Johnson and Thomas Johnson; by his niece, Nicole (Mark Bagnoli) Johnson as well as many other friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his beloved wife whom he adored, Patricia.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 19th at 10 a.m. in the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd. Cohoes. Interment will follow in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home on Monday, July 18th from 4-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
