Obituary for Helen Pauline Jacon Rinchik

LATHAM Helen Pauline Jacon Rinchik, loved for her sweet and generous spirit, passed away in the embrace of her loving family at the Hospice Inn at St Peter’s Hospital on Monday, February 1, 2021. She was 97.

Helen was the daughter of the late Waclaw and Pauline Krawiec Dziekan, and the beloved wife of late husband William Rinchik.

Born and educated in Cohoes, Helen was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Trinity. She worked as a seamstress for Troytown Shirt Company at the Harmony Mills, married Bill in 1952, and doted over sons Bob and Bill. She enjoyed traveling, visiting with family and friends, and crocheting heirlooms for loved ones. Helen had a sharp mind, cleverly repairing or creating items with whatever she had on hand and rarely sitting for long. She took great pride in her home, cooking delicious Polish foods, baking, cleaning, and gardening.

Helen’s greatest joy was spending time with family and cheering her grandchildren’s every achievement as they grew. Chris, Emma and Ethan all adored her. At any age, their visits to Grandma’s meant raiding a cookie jar stuffed with her homemade treats, building a backyard snowman or blanket fort, savoring Sunday suppers with lemon meringue pie, gathering garden cucumbers, potatoes, and tomatoes, and chatting in rocking chairs on the back porch.

Helen was a devout Catholic, and included many in her daily prayers and rosaries. She never stopped nibbling on chocolate mint patties and, until her final days, delighted all of us with her sense of humor, resilience, and caring ways. She was deeply loved and will be missed.

She is survived by her devoted sons Robert W. (Theresa) Rinchik of Latham; and William A. (Sandra) Rinchik of Laguna Niguel, CA; cherished grandchildren Christopher, Emma, and Ethan Rinchik; cousins and lifelong friends Helen Zdunek and Sophie Dubois; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Julia (Joe) Smith and Mary (Jim) Broderick, brother Michael (Olga) Jacon, nephews Rev. Richard Broderick and James Broderick, and niece Phyllis Carlino.

Relatives and friends may call on Friday, February 5th from 9:30 -10:30 am, at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Cohoes. Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be with her beloved husband, Bill, at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Masks will be required, and social distancing regulations observed.

The family wishes to extend very special thanks to Doctors Ismail and Nazir, Landmark Health, Mary Miele and the Marro family, Jill Casey, Bridget Frankow-Mucha, and all those who helped to care for Helen over the years. We are also grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Our Lady of Mercy Rehab, St. Peter’s Hospital, and the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s for their compassionate care during Helen’s final days.
