Obituary for Maria Soroka

MECHANICVILLE Maria Soroka, 87, entered into eternal life Sunday, March 13, 2022 at the Eddy Village Green in Cohoes surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Wawrzka, Poland on March 8, 1935, Maria was the daughter of the late Theodore and Natalia Kuzemczak and step daughter of the late Stefan Ciolka. She immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled first in Long Island and then in Mechanicville where she spent most of her life. She had been employed as a seamstress in the local textile mills in Mechanicville, Ballston Spa and Schenectady. She also belonged to St. Peter and St. Paul’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Cohoes, and she always enjoyed knitting, cooking, flowers (especially roses) and gardening.

Family was paramount for Maria and she and her husband, Jan Soroka, worked hard to educate their children with the goal of giving them a better life. She was always happiest when spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Maria was predeceased by her husband Jan Soroka. Maria is survived by her loving children, Lidia (Jan) Hudak of Cohoes, Stefania (Jess) Curiale of Ballston Spa, Alex Soroka of Mechanicville, Sonia (Michael) Kosciolek of Oakland, NJ and Gregory (Tracy) Soroka of Ballston Lake. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Matthew, Phillip, Jared, Joshua and Sophia; her great grandchildren, Julia and Adam; her siblings, Halinka, Slawka, Dymytro, and Wasyl; her sisters in law, Janina Soroka and Maria Kopyscianski as well as several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Stefka, Antosia, Gregory, Helena, Aleksandra and Jan.

Maria’s family would especially like to thank the staff at the Eddy Village Green, House #14 for the wonderful care provided to their mother.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter & St. Paul’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 198 Ontario St., Cohoes. Interment will follow in St. Peter & St. Paul’s Cemetery in Waterford.

Relatives and friends may visit Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes.

A Panakhyda service will be held in the funeral home at 5:30 p.m.
