Obituary for Paul A. Tofte

MELROSE Paul A. Tofte, age 83, passed away on March 21, 2022.

Born in Cohoes on December 7, 1938, Paul was the son of Olaf and Elna Tofte. Paul was the loving husband of 57 years to Bernice (Obzud) Tofte; father of Paul T. Tofte and Tammy Mitchell; grandfather (Pa) of Paul J. Tofte (Alexandra), Nicholas Tofte, Alexandria Mitchell and Matthew Mitchell; great grandfather of Sadie Tofte; brother of Shirley Taylor, Sylvia Baker, and the late Elaine Hare and Marilyn Shumpis; brother-in-law to Joseph Obzud (Mary Anne) and James Brennan (Julie) and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Paul worked as an automotive mechanic for over 40 years but was a jack of all trades. He worked for Latham Ford and owned Paul’s Autobody on Bedford Street in Cohoes. Paul was the man that could build or fix anything, including building the house he shared with his wife for over 50 years and raised his children in. Paul used his incredible talents and abilities to help everyone he met. Paul was a tough Norwegian with a heart of gold and his soft spot was his grandchildren who he spoiled, especially during the school summer breaks when he watched and enjoyed every minute with them as they grew into young adults. Paul was a longtime fan of car racing including NASCAR and Albany-Saratoga Raceway, where his son previously raced and he served as his son’s mechanic. Paul’s other passion was cooking for his family. He was always looking for new recipes to try. Paul will be dearly missed but never forgotten. He left an imprint on the hearts of everyone who knew him. He was truly one of the good guys.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes. Interment will follow in Waterford Rural Cemetery.
