Obituary for Peter J. Ensel Jr.

COHOES Peter J. Ensel, Jr, 93, formerly of Cohoes, entered into eternal rest peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, July 2, 2021 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY. Born in Cohoes, he was the son of the late Peter J. and Edna Dyrcz Ensel, Sr. and beloved husband of the late Ethel Green Ensel and Almeda Broomhead Ensel.

Peter was raised and educated in Cohoes and was a proud World War II Navy Veteran. He retired in 1988 as a letter carrier with the Cohoes Post Office. Known fondly to many on his mail route by both young and old as “Pete the mailman”. Peter enjoyed teaching many youth’s baseball and basketball. He was the basketball coach for the City of Cohoes Recreation League and also the baseball coach for the Cohoes Little League and Babe Ruth League. Peter was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the excitement of the Casinos. He was a lifelong NY Yankee and Giants fan.

Two of Peter’s biggest thrills of his life were first, on May 13, 2017 when it was declared Peter Ensel Day in Cohoes in honor of his participation on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC and secondly on February 22, 1980, he was in the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid with his son and brother to witness the miracle on ice, United States - Russia hockey game.

Sunday dinners are legendary among his family. He was a skilled conversationalist, who loved to sit and discuss a wide range of topics. He was also a keen practical joker.

He is survived by his loving son, Peter J. (Carla) Ensel, III of Plattsburgh and daughter, Catherine (Donald) Clairmont of Cohoes, grandchildren, Bryan (Dr. Richard Zack-Guasp) Ensel, Chelsea Ensel, Amanda (Mark) Dorr, Margaret (Paul) Giller, J. D. Clairmont, Sean (Riane) Clairmont and William (Tara) Clairmont, 13 great grandchildren, brother, Joseph (the late Phyllis) Ensel and several loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving daughter, Rona Ensel.

Funeral from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd Thursday morning at 11:30 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Thursday at noon. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Relatives and friends may visit at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-7 pm.
