Obituary for Robert H. Ishkanian

TROY A longtime fixture in Troy/Lansingburgh aboard his maroon Schwinn Super Sport ten-speed, Robert H. Ishkanian, 74 passed from this world into the next on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Albany Medical Center.

Born on November 13, 1946 in Troy, Bob was the son of the late Arthur and Grace Sunkjian Ishkanian.

A graduate of Troy High School, Hudson Valley Community College and Siena College, Robert served his country as an officer in the National Guard serving with distinction as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard in Washington D.C. during the Richard Nixon presidency.

A loyal husband and father, brother and son, uncle and friend, he was loved for his ability to speak with authority on a wide range of topics. From politics to sports and history to horse races, he made his opinions known to the world in letters to editors and calls to talk-radio.

While he enjoyed his career/s with the Troy Housing Authority, Verizon, and (even the villainous) Internal Revenue Service, he would be described by no one, as materialistic nor as just another member of the unthinking herd.

From top to bottom, his authentic personality (and trademark hair) was unmistakably his own and was a direct representation of his core identity as a truly independent thinker and humble soul.

Bob, who could only take the scenic route and never pass by a playground without stopping to spend time there with Erika and Jessica, is remembered by all for his well-rounded and robust personality, his love of animals, and his one of a kind sense of humor which were always on display at family gatherings he loved and looked forward to over the decades.

Bob was the beloved husband of Dale Carner Ishkanian; the loving father of Erika Ishkanian-Salz (Richard Alan Salz) of Pawlet, VT and Jessica Ishkanian (Kevin Dewey) of Nassau; the brother of Jane Ishkanian-Flanagan (late Frank) of Wilmington, VT; the brother-in-law of Debbie Adams (John), Dawn Doty (late Bill), Kathy Carner, Yvonne Lewandowski (Chester), Kimberly Reilly (Doug Empie), Harvey Carner (Denise) and the late Kelly Carner. Bob is also survived by his mother-in-law, Phyllis Carner (late Harvey) as well as several nieces and nephews and his two best canine “sons”, Ian and Cooper.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home from 1-4 p.m. prior to the service.

Those wishing to remember Bob in a special way may make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105
